When you are looking to learn something new on the internet especially learning python and you type “learn [enter technology here]” scrolling through the search results is like trying to take a drink from a fire hydrant. There are so many different resources out there and it’s hard to choose which ones are best or even any good at all.
So I made a list of all the courses or membership websites that I’ve been a part of and used personally for learning python and these are the ones I recommend.
Let’s start with the free resources first. Note these in this section are all free some with options for a paid upgrade but the free tier is sufficient and they are not affiliate links.
Codecademy – If you read through any google search for 5 minutes this is one that comes up. I know they have their focus on other technologies but this will get you into the basics and build your knowledge if you have zero background with python or any programming language.
pythonprogramming.net or Sentdex on youtube – If you really want to have any resource for learning python this is one you will use over and over again. Harrison covers a lot of things in Python, from Raspberry Pi to data science, web development and desktop applications. His focus is obviously on the data science end but he for sure has a lot of content there and all free of course there is the ability to subscribe and support him but that’s up to you.
One-Time Paid Courses
For this section I only have two, but I found them to be really good. They are Udemy courses and Udemy is Udemy but these are good.
Django 2 & Python | The Ultimate Web Development Course – This course is by Nick Walter and I really like his style. I’ve done quite a bit of different courses on django and after taking his it really just clicked for me. He has a section in there as a refresher for python if you are just learning python. I like the fact that he is teaching Django 2, as that’s the way forward and learning any version lower isn’t the best choice especially if you are new.
The Complete Python Course | Learn by doing – By Jose Salvatierra. I really like this course it really helped me cement the idea of object oriented programming in my head. I struggled wrapping my head around that and this course really helped me with that. Plus he covers using SQLIte and has a section on Flask (a small web application framework).
This section has resources that require a monthly payment. But depending on what you want to learn and how serious you are they are really worth the price.
Datacamp – I love this site for learning all things data science, they have interactive tutorials and you code all the concepts as you go along working with real datasets. There is so much content there and with tracks you won’t have to decide which courses you should learn next, it’s all laid out for you. Each course will take about four hours to complete. It’s a great resource if you are learning python for data science.
Treehouse – This is where I started learning programming years ago. This site has just about anything you would want to learn about web development. If you want to learn web development this is the site to be signed up for. If you’re looking for a career in web dev they have tech degrees which is more money but it’s set up to get you completely job ready. With mile stone projects and all the above to help you get hired.
These are my highest recommends, and some of them are affiliate links. If at any point you have questions about these sites please do not hesitate to contact me. I will answer your questions or point you in the direction to find your answer. Even if you don’t have a question and just want to share your successes drop me an email or mention me on twitter.
If you want to keep up with what I’m doing and get some great tips on learning python be sure to sign up to my email list to keep in the loop.
